Photographs That Changed The World

February 19th, 2008

Photographers have captured many images of news events from around the world that have become iconic for one reason or another. We all have particular images that come to mind when we think of significant events in our lives. For me, the one image I will never forget is of the Chinese student, with what looked like shoppng bags in his hands, standing in front of a convoy of tanks during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. He brought a column of tanks to a standstill as they moved into Tiananmen square. As the tanks got closer to him, he moved from side to side to stop the tanks passing him. This was a very brave move to make at the time as the authorities had a track record of shooting first and asking questioins later. He really did risk his life by doing what he did and the photograph became synonymous with the fight for democracy and freedom. The student, I believe, was never traced and became known as “Tank Man“.

This image was taken by Jeff Widener (of the Associated Press) from the sixth floor of the Beijing Hotel, about half a mile away, through a 400mm lens.

There are many other famous images that people of a certain age will identify with immediatley and there has been many images created during the past few years and that will become iconic in the future. There is already many images taken of 9/11 that you will just never forget. The same can be said of the war in Iraq and other conflict situations around the world. Think also of poverty stricken countries in Africa and beyond and in particular Darfur.
