Domain Name Suggestion Tools
Published by Stephen | Filed under Domain Names, Tools, Webmaster Tools
The internet has been around for quite some time now and you could be forgiven for thinking that all the best domain names have now been registered. It is true that most (if not all) single words and (sensible) double word phrases have been snapped up, but with a bit of imagination and the use of one of the online domain suggestion tools, you should be able to come up with something that will be perfect for the project you are working on.
I have been doing a bit of a scout ’round to see what these tools are like and reviewed a couple below. Most of the tools work in the same way - enter a couple of keywords that you are interested in and hit search.
The phrases I tried were “blue sky” “red blood” purely because these are common words!
There are a number of settings here that you can change to refine the results. They are as follows:
Options - include hyphens, numbers or both
Adult Content - Can be switched on or off
Topical, Basic or Similar - These three drop down menus can be changed to suit your requirements when researching keywords. The options are off, low, medium and high. You will get slightly different results when changing these.
Maximum Length - The maximum length of characters in the domain name suggested. The default setting is 30.
TLD - Choose .com .net .tv or .cc (all are ticked as default).
The search will return 10 results and you can purchase any you are interested in by clicking the “add” link.
For my search “red blood” the top fives results where:
reddonor.com
scarletblood.com
amountblood.com
crimsondonor.com
lossblood.com
For my search “blue sky” the top fives results where:
webbluesky.com
azurepitch.com
azurecloud.com
bluewilco.com
blueskyctr.com
The interface and search function here is much more simple than DomainIt, you just enter a few words, hit search and sit back.
My first search here was “blue sky”. The results are in list format. They include all domain extensions (.com, .net, .org etc) that are currently registered with a link to the WHOIS record. There are results further down the list with domains such as blueskies.com and blueatmosphere.com that are for sale, but the first real suggestion for an available domain name is azuresky.info. This is actually 13th in the list. If you wish to chase an existing domain, you can backorder it via pool.com
First impressions of the results are not great, but a quick glance around the page soon shows that the results can be further refined, allowing you to select available, expiring or for sale domains, as well as making further word suggestions relating to the initial search. When I changed the criteria to .com and available only, the results where much better and returned 500 in total.
The first five suggestions for “blue sky” here where:
indigoheavens.com
indigoatmosphere.com
navyheavens.com
navyfirmament.com
coloredheavens.com
The first five suggestions for “red blood” here where:
redhemoglobin.com
redvitalfluid.com
scarletblood.com
rubyblood.com
magentablood.com
cherrygore.com
These tools are an excellent way for providing a train of thought you may not ordinarily follow and can come up with some cracking suggestions for domain names, but make sure you have made yourself a cup of tea before you start, as you will probably spend some time tweaking your suggestions!
